The St Austell Golf Club is located in Cornwall, 35 kilometers west of Plymouth, and a 45 minute drive from Falmouth. Its course designed by James Braid and its magnificent setting have attracted curious visitors and regulars for more than a hundred years.
The St. Austell Golf Club course is an 18-hole, par-69 (6042-yard) park-style course. It presents a great difficulty with many obstacles and a wind that you have to know how to tame to reach the expected par.
St Austell Golf Club first came into existence in 1911. By 1913 the club had a 14 hole course in play and when in March 1914 Mr Arthur Roberts gave up his lease on the Tregongeeves lands in favor from the club, a full 18-hole course of approximately 4300 yards was quickly completed. In November 1925, the Club was able to seek the advice of five-time Open champion James Braid, a prolific course designer. Braid planned several new holes on the raw mine waste area to the south of the course, in which all natural hazards were used (today holes 13, 14, 15 and 16). He also suggested improvements to other holes where "every feature and inclination of the terrain, even the prevailing wind, was taken into account". It was not until 1936 that the course designed by Braid was opened.
