British nationals introduced golf to Italy, establishing the country's first golf club, the Florence Golf Club, in 1889. The club was renamed Ugolino Golf Club in 1933 when a new course was built. The original 1889 course was taken over by Roma Acquasanta, which had been established in 1903. Despite this history, golf is not yet a major sport here; there are some 300 courses and only 90 Italians belong to a club. Golf is played the most in the country in the north of Italy. It is in the population centers, from Turin to Venice, that we find the greatest concentration of golf courses in the country. Unfortunately, the vast and spectacular Italian coastline is hardly devoted to golf, even if it turns out that the mountains reach down to the sea and limit the possibilities of playing in links. Outside the north, Rome naturally has a number of courses, and the headquarters of the Italian Golf Federation is in Le Querce, near the capital. Most international tournaments that come to Italy are played in Turin, Milan, Verona or Venice and their surroundings, although the Eisenhower Trophy was held at the Olgiata Golf Club in Rome in 000. There are many different golf experiences. in and around the northern lakes. The best club is Villa d'Este, which is part of a 1964th century hotel located on the western shore of Lake Como; the Italian amateur championship has been played there for a long time and the Italian Open is also organized there. The Villa d'Este is one of those narrow and tight courses that are typical of courses on the European continent, which demands a combination of precision and intelligence. For most of the last century, golf was a hobby of the elite of Italian society, and amateur tournaments were dominated by such figures as Count Sabini, Signora Isa Goldschmid and his brother Franco Bevione, who have held the country's title for more than half of the 25 years immediately following World War II. Later, Constantino Rocca, who turned pro in 1981, scored several victories on the European Tour and is so far the only compatriot to have taken part in the Ryder Cup. In recent years, brothers Francisco and Eduardo Molinari have made a name for themselves, becoming in 2009 the first brothers and sisters to triumph at the World Cup in China; Eduardo also managed to win the American Amateur Championship. Italy is a must-see destination for all lovers of golf, gastronomic culture and nature trips.
