The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande course is considered one of Robert Trent Jones' masterpieces. Indeed, he chose this course as one of his five favorites among more than 500 courses which he drew in the whole world according to these writings in his book "GOLF - THE MANIFICIENT CHALLENGE" - published in 1988.
Officially opened in 1964, Sotogrande was the first course designed by Trent Jones in Europe. It benefits from its design philosophy, which consists of building courses perfectly integrated into the natural environment. this represents a great challenge for the best players, but which is accessible and enjoyable for all. Only 150 meters from the Mediterranean, it is a fascinating course for players of all levels which preserves all the natural beauty of the terrain on which it was built.
This Par 72 course measures 6,492 meters. It offers wide fairways and raised greens, delicately shaped and very fast. These difficult to tie together constitute the greatest difficulty of the course. Of the hundred or so bunkers on the course, 69 are placed around the greens. An alert for the golfer forcing him to great precision for attacking the greens and precise irons play.
The variety of holes is another characteristic of Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Indeed, a variety not only in the design of the course and the distances but also in its vegetation. The mixture of cork oaks, pines, palms and an abundance of other species, give the course a wonderful personality and beauty.
The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande course is very well balanced. Of the first 9 holes, the 4's and 7's will highlight good examples of the risk factor Trent Jones rewards by asking players to choose whether a hole should be a tough par or an easy bogey. The same can also be said for holes 13 and 15 on the last 9 holes.
The quality of the course is very well illustrated by the quality of the champions who have trodden its fairways: Severiano Ballesteros, Jose María Olazabal, Roberto de Vicenzo, Sergio García, Padraig Harrington or Rory Mcllroy ...
