The Golf of Spirona, the last masterpiece of Robert Trent Jones

In a letter he addressed on August 22, 1990 to Jean Kerguen, president of the golf course, Robert Trent Jones put Spirona on a par with the greatest American courses: “For the splendor of its site and the variety of its holes. " I consider that the sequence of the five holes on the cliff is on a par with the most beautiful sequences of Pebble Beach and Cypress Point"

That is two of the five largest American courses. The tribute might seem exaggerated. No, Robert Trent Jones was not wrong. His streak which begins or second shot on 11 and ends on the green of 16 is unparalleled in Europe.

Geological curiosity, the white limestone coast that runs from Bonifacio turns into ocher granite on the green of 11 and the par 3 of 12, a small wonder nestled between large rocks polished by the wind.

Between two swings, the gaze is lost or wide on the Lavezzi and Cavallo islands. And when the weather is very clear, Sardinia can be guessed. The Italian island is so close that in summer, when the days are long, gourmets take the boat and disembark in Porto Torres to taste the suckling pig under the ashes (typical Sardinian plot) and come back to play. Spirona golf course or the most favorable moment, when the heat decreases and when the softer light tints the course with pastel colors.

Spirona, the last masterpiece of Robert Trent Jones, has become over the years one of the great pride of the Isle of Beauty. Because the southernmost course in mainland France is also a maquis golf course, the symbol of Corsica.

When the ball leaves the fairways and you look for it, you are then immersed in the heady scents of these brushwood, a skilful mix of myrtles, heather, lavender, thyme and rosemary… Scents exalted by the heat which intoxicate the senses. The quintessence of the south concentrated on this piece of land, or the middle of the Mediterranean.
