Northern Irish Rory McIlroy flew over the 4th round of the Canada Open, to win with seven strokes ahead of its first pursuers, Sunday in Hamilton (Ontario).

McIlroy, 30, marked the spirits a few days before the US Open, the third Grand Slam tournament of the year which begins Thursday in Pebble Beach (California).

He claimed his sixteenth title on the American professional circuit of golf (PGA) with nine birdies, including four consecutive between holes N.11 and N.14, an eagle and two bogeys, for a total of 258 (-22). The former world No.1 completed the 4th round with a card of 61 (-9), tying his personal best on a day on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy, co-leader at the start of the day with two other players, seemed able to finish with an extremely rare card of 59, but he lost his focus with two bogeys on the last three holes.

"I had a great week, I'm really proud of myself"

He relegated Irishman Shawn Lowry and American Webb Simpson, tied for second, seven strokes (2, -265). “I wanted to start the day very aggressively. I was so liberated on Saturday and wanted to continue this momentum, it worked. Playing like that gives a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, especially for the US Open next week ”, underlined the Northern Irishman whose fourth Grand Slam title dates back to 2014.

You have to go down to 50th place to find world No.1 Brooks Koepka, who won the last two editions of the US Open.

The American, who won the PGA Championship last month, was relegated twenty strokes behind McIlroy (278, -2). 2018 Canada Open winner Dustin Johnson of the United States made a better impression, but he had to settle for 20th place (273, -7), 15 strokes behind the winner of the day.
