Real Club Valderrama is located in Andalusia, the largest and southernmost region of Spain. A few kilometers north of Gibraltar, it is about a two hour drive from Cadiz and an hour and a half from Malaga. The climate is ideal for playing golf all year round.
The Valderrama Golf Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the Back-Tees. The fairways have been described by top golf professionals and top golf journalists as the best in Europe, if not the world. Long and technical, it is not an easy course. It is designed in such a way that it calls for thought and precision with every stroke.
The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great architects of golf, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981, its name was changed to Las Aves. Eventually, Ortiz-Patiño renamed the land Valderrama, in reference to the old estate on which the land is located.
In September 1997, Real Club Valderrama was the first venue in continental Europe to host the Ryder Cup. The European team, with its captain, the legendary Severiano Ballesteros had won against the Americans 14 ½ - 13 ½. It was the first of six consecutive victories for the team on European soil, a series which continues after the last success in France at the Golf National in 2018. In addition, the golf of Valderrama has traditionally played host to the former Volvo Masters, from 1988 to 2008.
