Quinta do Lago is an exceptional golf and residential area. It is nestled in nearly 2.000 hectares of nature and pine forests, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in the Algarve. Since its establishment in 1972, Quinta do Lago has won several awards of excellence and is a symbol of luxury tourism, a place where outstanding natural beauty is perfectly complemented by a warm atmosphere.
Quinta do Lago is located just 20 minutes drive from Faro International Airport. This complex has 3 18-hole golf courses: Quinta do Lago Nord, Quinta do Lago Sud and the Laranjal course.
The North Course was completely redesigned in 2014, by renowned architect Beau Welling, in collaboration with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. The new track was built to the highest standards, with an investment of 9 million euros.
All greens, tee areas, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been reconstructed using innovative technology. Four Tee Tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all skill levels. Golfers face a variety of undulating greens, well-placed bunkers and water hazards.
The aesthetics and environmental impact of this 18-hole Par-72 course have been significantly improved. In addition, the renovation has encouraged the recycling of water and the use of solar energy, while the grassed areas will promote the creation of new ecosystems.
The south course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who introduced American standard greens, teeing areas and bunkers to the Algarve. Quickly, the course acquired a prestigious reputation and became a flagship of the European circuit. The 18-hole Par 72 of 6 meters is one of the favorites for players on the European circuit. It is surrounded by umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers and overlooks the majestic Ria Formosa Natural Park.
The Southern Course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, including Colin Montgomerie's victory in 1989. Having won with a score of 24 under Par, he finished 11 strokes ahead and broke the world record. with a score of 63.
Its status as a championship golf course does not penalize the amateur golfer, however. While the 8th, 15th and 18th holes are holes that test low handicap players, the course's varying difficulty challenges golfers of all skill levels. Accurate faceoffs are essential to reach the fairways. Indeed, the variety of holes offer dog legs and strategically placed obstacles, which increases the difficulty of the course. The first nine holes, which meander through the park, favor Draw players. While the last nine holes, which circle the lake, favor Fade players.
Laranjal opened in 2009 and was voted best golf course at the Portuguese Travel Awards 2011.
Originally, it was an orange grove. This 18 hole Par 72 championship course is located 2 km east of the Resort, in the Ludo Valley. With remarkable fairways and well-designed greens, Laranjal is renowned for its five magnificent lakes, umbrella pines, cork oaks and orange trees.
At 6 meters in length, this difficult course demands maximum concentration and precision. Its characteristic hilly terrain has been rigorously designed and maintained to provide a world-class golfing experience.
Equipped with five par 5, eight par 4 and five par 3, the course is embellished with rather thick rough which borders the fairways and Penn the greens. You will be seduced by the quality and general maintenance of the course throughout the year.
