Indeed, he chose this course as one of his five favorites among more than 500 courses which he drew in the whole world according to these writings in his book "GOLF - THE MANIFICIENT CHALLENGE" - published in 1988.
The signing of Robert Trent Jones
Officially opened in 1964, Sotogrande was the first course designed by Trent Jones in Europe. It benefits from its design philosophy, which consists of building courses perfectly integrated into the natural environment. this represents a great challenge for the best players, but which is accessible and enjoyable for all. Only 150 meters from the Mediterranean, it is a fascinating course for players of all levels which preserves all the natural beauty of the terrain on which it was built.
The course of the Sotogrande Real Club
This Par 72 course measures 6,492 meters. It offers wide fairways and raised greens, delicately shaped and very fast. These difficult to tie together constitute the greatest difficulty of the course. Of the hundred or so bunkers on the course, 69 are placed around the greens. An alert for the golfer forcing him to great precision for attacking the greens and precise irons play.
The variety of holes is another characteristic of Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Indeed, a variety not only in the design of the course and the distances but also in its vegetation. The mixture of cork oaks, pines, palms and an abundance of other species, give the course a wonderful personality and beauty.
The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande course is very well balanced. The same can also be said for holes 13 and 15 on the last 9 holes.

History
In the 60s and 70s, when Spain's Costa del Sol was experiencing a construction boom, the competition for beautiful Mediterranean vistas was fierce and usually won by residential construction projects. The Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has managed to claim a beautiful location and has remained for almost half a century at the center of the Spanish golf world.
The country's tourism board has done a lot to promote this championship course, especially when the European Tour started, when it helped organize the Spanish Open here, just a few years after Las Brisas opened. .
On a hilly site with a resolutely American feel, the recently renovated clubhouse meets the needs of more than a thousand members from over thirty different countries.
Lush vegetation
The harmonious landscaping created by Englishman Gerald Huggan perfectly complements the design of the golf course. Like a botanical garden, plants and trees from all the continents of the world fill the route with imagination and color. Here you will find rare species from Africa such as Cape Chestnut and Thorny Acacias, Indian Laurel and Mysore Ficus from Asia, Chorisia Spciosa from America, Green Ash from Mexico and Piping Pine from Australia , combined with many palms and Mediterranean trees.
Spain is today a must-see destination for golfers of all levels. Indeed with its privileged climate, the ease of access of its courses, its culture and its gastronomy, the country abounds in courses of international class and receives some of the most beautiful competitions of the European circuit. So playing golf in Spain means choosing exceptional courses, often with proximity to the sea.
Located in southwestern Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, Spain is a country where sun and heat are guaranteed at all times of the year. The good weather, the superb visibility, the absence of wind and the pleasant climate are perfect for playing golf. In addition, this country has excellent connections: you can easily travel from one region to another, and there are many golf courses only a few kilometers from the main international airports.
What a magical land for golf, Spain has become such an amazing golf destination and it is remarkable how much it has continued to develop in recent years. In the mid-1990s, everyone thought of only one destination, the Costa del Sol, but there are many more possibilities in other parts of Spain.
Whether you enjoy the Catalan style in the regions of the Costa Brava, with its rugged coasts and sandy beaches, or in the arid and rocky regions of Almeria or Murcia, further south, where there are palm trees crisp or desert-style golf courses. Without forgetting of course the new Nicklaus Golf Trail, which is growing month by month.
Whether you prefer the Costa Blanca to the Costa del Sol, it is of course impossible to compare Benidorm to Marbella, but the Costa Blanca has magnificent white sand beaches, far superior to the Costa del Sol. The Costa del Sol has the remarkable 54-hole resort of La Cala and the superb complex ofAlmenara to Sotogrande, including the elegant La Reserva, complemented by a few small luxury golf hotels in Finca Cortesin et Los Flamingos.
Finally, if you are looking for the real Spain and the very heart of Andalusia, go to Alcaidesa Links, which has regained its best level. It will take you 90 minutes more by plane to reach the Canaries, which are perhaps more expensive all year round, but guarantee a wonderful temperature of 23 degrees all year round and you can choose between Tenerife ou Gran Canaria.
